METALLICA Surprise Fans At Britain's DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL
June 1, 2003Despite an official denial by the festival's organizers that they would be making a surprise appearance at the event, METALLICA performed a 10-song set at the Download music festival in Derbyshire, England on Sunday (June 1).
Just 8,000 of the 40,000 people at the festival were able to see the show by the band, with many more lining up to catch a glimpse of them, reports the BBC.
"They went down a storm, it was the best thing that could have happened to the festival," Steve Guest, a spokesman for promoter Clear Channel, told BBC News Online.
"News got around by word of mouth, and the overspill from the Scuzz stage was amazing.
"Everyone was enjoying it, we've had kids of six and seven holding onto their dads' shoulders giving out rock signs."
The event had been hit by the withdrawal of LIMP BIZKIT last month, and organizers had denied reports that METALLICA were appearing because of contractual reasons.
METALLICA's setlist for their Download appearance was as follows:
01. Blackened
02. No Remorse
03. Harvester of Sorrow
04. Frantic
05. Sad But True
06. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
07. St. Anger
08. Master of Puppets
Encore:
09. Creeping Death
10. Damage Inc.
Other acts appearing at the festival included MARILYN MANSON, IRON MAIDEN, DEFTONES, and EVANESENCE.
METALLICA's new CD, "St. Anger", is due in the U.S. on June 10 through Elektra Records. The band's tenth album (eighth studio album),"St. Anger" was produced by Bob Rock and recorded at the band's Headquarters in San Rafael, California. In addition to eleven new tracks, the special digipack will include a free DVD featuring live rehearsal recordings of all eleven songs, also captured at the band's HQ.
